Description

Shortly after Porsche began producing the 356, to broaden its appeal, it cut off the roof to turn it into a convertible. This new cabriolet quickly began to gain popularity- especially in America, where they were pushed by official Porsche importer Max Hoffman. Hoffman made a name for himself by having an innate sense of what American customers wanted and being able to convince manufacturers to put these models into production. In 1955, Hoffman encouraged Porsche to develop a cabriolet version of the 356 which was more stripped out, with bucket seats and minimal options that his customers could take racing. This was the genesis of the 356 Speedster-one of the most famous Porsche convertibles of all time- and cemented the American market's desire for drop-top sports cars. When Porsche was developing the 993, they knew from experience that the majority of Cabriolet production was going there and they developed the most refined 911 convertible yet- able to be as comfortable on a backroad as it is on the interstate. Their assumptions proved correct and when it was all said and done, nearly 60% of all 993 Convertibles produced were sent to the United States. Featuring a hand-stitched, fully electric soft top with reinforced metal sheets, the 993 Cabriolet offered comfort and quiet with the top up. Thanks to the integrated automatic wind blocker, it was equally pleasant to drive with the top down.

This 1998 993 Carrera Cabriolet is in showroom fresh condition and shows a mere 16,000 miles from new. Presented in the always classic color combination of black over black, this 993 was carefully specced when new and meticulously cared for by its four owners over the past 23 years. Sold new through Stevens Creek Porsche in Santa Clara, CA, the car's original purchase price was $78,908 which included desirable options such as leather seats, Hi-Fi Stereo upgrade and the Motor Sound package. One very noticeable difference between this 993 and most others is the sought-after 18” Porsche Sport Classic wheels which are filled out by a new set of Michelin PS2 tires. In 2017, the convertible soft top was professionally replaced and appears to be in excellent condition- these tops can begin to look loose over time but this car's retains the shape it was meant to have. Under the engine cover is the famed 3.6-Liter Flat-6 with a Varioram variable intake runner system. The car's 282 horsepower is sent through a 6-speed manual gearbox which allows the car to sprint from 0-60mph in around 5 seconds and then on to a top speed of over 160mph. This car has been fastidiously maintained from new and was the recent recipient of an oil and filter service along with a comprehensive Pre Purchase Inspection which shows a car so original, the cosmoline is still present on the underside of the engine. With just over 17,000 993 Cabriolets ever built, it is hard to imagine that more than a few remain in such outstanding condition.
